Topic: theme of tom jones
Virtue as a action rather than thought
Fielding contrast the
concept of virtue expoused by character like square and thawackums with the
virtue actually practised by jones and allworthy. Tom as the active hero who
saves damsels in distressand plans on the fighting for his country is the
embodiments of the very active type of virtue that fielding esteems.
The
impossibility of stereotypical categorisation
Fielding’s novel attempts
to break down numerous boundaries in term of genre fielding cannot decide whether
his novel is philosophical history a romance or an epee comic prosaic poem yet
through these confounded musing fielding subtly suggest that cataloguing
fiction is silly and that he found rather than think of himself as the founder
of new province of writing In another example of broken stereotype fielding
character cannot be distinguished bymasculine feminine traits in this novel both menand women both fight
cry.
Human nature
The narrator explains to
the reader in the opening chapter that human nature is the main provision on offer.
He does not intend to make any judgement on human nature much of athe criticism
on tom jones was in responses to the licentious behaviour of character such as
molly seagrimeMrs.water and lady bellaston fielding was not advocating any of
the immoral behaviours of this character but merely presenting their actions as
a steps on the road to greater wisdom. Molly seagrime is passionate and lusty
young women she bewitches tom into his first sexual experience and attempts to
ensnare him as protector by having his child when tom knows that he is not the
father of her child molly finally settles with the partridge. At the end of the
novel. So ends up with someone to love and support her.
Hypocrisy
In the novel we see
hypocrisy as the most pernicious and damaging. The novel highlights hypocrisy
across the social spectrum through the lens of humour .goody seagrime condemns.
Molly for falling pregnant yet it is revealed that she gave birth
within a week of her own marriage future we discover later that she
shared in the profits of iniquity with her daughter after molly’s relationship
with Mr.square is exposed .the hypocrisy
of the lower class is future illustrated when fair molly is viciously attacked
un church yard after attending church in
affine dress
Squire western changes his
attitude to tom depending upon how he perceives the Youngman’s circumstances.
Fielding illustrates the danger of double standards through even the best
character. Allworthy resolves to favour blifil not because he has faith in
Youngman’s character but because he is not favoured by others.
Marriage
Fielding began the novel
after the death of his first wife charlotte Cradock and his deep affection for
her is embodiment in the character of Sophia. The institution of marriage is
like books other issues. Explored through each strata of society. We see mgrs.
Partridge and the envenomed wrath with which she attacks her husbands after
hearing the speculation that he has made jenny jones pregnant. This reflects
the anger Mr.fitzpatrick Feels for the lieutenant who is more engaged by his
wife’s wit than by his own.
Morality and
Ethics
There’s
some serious stuff going on like big moral issues. According to squire allwarthy
there are to ways to be immoral imprudence and villainy they’re very different.
Tom’s
imprudent: too much drinking too much spending too much sex etc…this gets him
into sticky situation that are for the most part hilarious. But then there’s
villa nary and villainy is serious bizniz because it permanently points your
character to dark side .so while tom has made some serious mistake as long as
he changes his tunes all’s forgiven always a villain.
Future
Fortune is
personified in the text as if it is a physical entity or active constituent of
the plot it is not viewed as supernatural force. Fielding goes to great pains
to condemn the use of supernatural devices as a simple solution to challenges
of plot or characterization. Fortune describes how characters own qualities are
projected into events and situation. Allworthy is described as the favourite of
both nature and fortune
Wisdom
Wisdom is
tom ultimate goal even if even if he does not initially realize it once he
attains wisdom. He reaches end of his journey and path is open towards Sophia.
His relation with molly teaches him that women may not be constant.Nightingale
teaches tom how to navigate polite society and he is rescued from penury by the
intervention of friends he had loyally supported.
Money wealth
and greed
Money and the temptations
it offers affects most of the story part
of toms virtue that he is blissfully ignorant
of the greed and negativity which the desire for money can inspire when he leaves paradise hall he is given
money by allworthy but he loses it..
The most important example
of greed comes through blifil both he and his father are undone by their greed.
Captain Blifil dies of an apoplexy as he lust over his brother in laws lands because
of his greed he dismissed his brother following the match with Bridget.
. The tension between art and
artifice
Although the narrator
upholds the value of natural art in his character, he uses artifice himself in
the construction of his novel. Forexample he often closes chapters by hinting
to the reader that is to fallow in the next chapter or he warns the reader that
he is going to omit a scene. In such away he prevents us from suspending our
disbelief and giving over self-up to the art of narrative instead fielding
constantly entices us to reflect on the review the process of construction.
Contrast in
verities of life
Henry fielding work
presents slice of life and in doing so it naturally presents all the natural verities
of living too. This becomes a major theme because it is apparent at more than
one place. Not only are the characters contrasted but also situations human
reactions and even a predicament. It is through these contrasted that fielding
manages to paint a realistic picture of life this picture is believable and
exciting all atonce, and owing to this theme is carried forth to the every end when
tom jones blifil are contrasted yet again.
Epic journey
towards manhood
The central themes of the
novel are the amusing epic journey of tom jones towards maturation,self-realisation
and union with his beloved. jones begins hisjourney as a mischievous
adolescent, continues as an adventurous and reckless teenager and concludes it
as a mature morally uprights adults settle down as a husband thehero confronts
perils and undergone trails before completing his journey in this respect fielding
hero is like the hero of homers odyssey,
he great epic poem recounting the adventures of Odysseus on his way home after
a Trojan war.
Love
Tom jones love for Sophia
thwarted at first his own behaviour and the action of others ,continueous to
burn within him after squire all worthy banishes him after tom determines to
win her back his love for her becomes the primary motive in everything he does
even when he becomes the plaything
of lady
Deceit
Bridget the mother of tom
hires jenny jones to pretend to be mother. Blifil learns after the death of his
mother that she was also the mother of tom jones but he pretends to know
nothing of a matter while continuing demean his half-brother.
Lack of self-control
Many of the characters act out like
the emotion or desire of the movement without regard the morality or
consequence of theiraction. Tom, bridgeallworthy, molly seagrime, lady Ballston,
mr.fitzpatrick and black George are among the characters that have lack self-mastery.
Thank you
