Topic :- Sri Aurobindo’s views on
education
Sri aurobindo; education which will
after the tools where by one can live for divine the country for oneself and
for others and this must be the ideal of every school which calls itself
national.
According to some learned people the
word education has been derived from the Latin term educatum which means the
act of teaching ortraining..A groupof educationalist say that it has come from
another Latin word educare which means to bring up or to rise
Sri Aurobindo was born in Calcutta on
15 august 1872 at the age of seven he was taken to England for education and
in1890 went up to king’s college Cambridge. Here he stood in first class and also
passed the final examination for the Indian civil service. He worked for the
next 13 years princely state of the Broada in the maharaja and professor in Baroda
College. Sri Aurobindo had begun the practice of yoga in 1905 in Baroda.
Renaissance is new birth in India if it is a fact must becomea
thing of immense importance both to herself and the world because of all that
is meant for her in the recovery or the change of her time old spirit and
national ideals to the world because of the possibilities involved in the
rearising of the force that is in many respects unlike any other and it’s from
the mentality and spirit that they have hitherto governed the modern idea in
mankind although not so far away perhaps
from that which is preparing to govern the future . European culture is a turning point .it was
first applied that was not so much a reawakening as an overturn and reversal a
seizure of Christianisedfeudalised Europe by the old graeceo Latin spirit and
from with all the complex and momentous result which came from it .
Critical pedagogy includes relationships between teaching and learning.
Itsproponent’s claims that it is a continuous process of what they call
unlearning and relearning, reflection, evaluation and the impact that these
action have on the student in particular student whom they believe have been
historically and continue to be disenfranchised by what they call traditional
schooling.
Sri Aurobindo
has been widely acclaimed as a modern seer and a Vedic scholar he had headed
the first national college of education of Calcutta and had written extensively
on subject ofeducation. His approach to integral education is in itself a unique concept education of
the body, mind spirits are each expoused in his writings on education but theirintegration
is even more significant. He has also dwelt on the social and psychological
aspects of education. His thought has been put to practice at Sri Aurobindo
ashrams the auroville and several other school of the country.
The first
principle of teaching is that nothing can be taught this statement of Sri
Aurobindo is intellectual approach to education it puts learning above
teaching. It makes learning a self-starting, self-propelling process it
redefines the role of teacher from mere possessor of information to a
facilitator and guide for the learner. I am not aware of any other profound
statement in teaching which has such a permanent validity. I wish to quote
sriaurobindo here to reflect the wide horizon of his perception education in
its international dimension on the one hand that of the external human values
on the other. The world state will give
its in habitants the great adventures of peace economic wellbeing general
security the intellectual cultural, social activity and progress. None of these
are in themselves sufficient to create the thing needed. For the certain
psychological elements would have to be present in great strength
First as a religion of the humanitymuch
more powerful, explicit, self-conscious universal in nationalist religion of
the country secondly clear recognition by man in all his thought and life of a
single soul of humanity of which each man and each people is an incarnation and
soul form, thirdly an ascension of men beyond the principle and arrangement of
the common life which would give free play to individual variation by which the
soul of man’s lives and grows great.
His expectation from
education are loud able and at the same time they reflect an ideal to be
pursued .it reflects the value of a modern world not scuttled by narrow
perception and drab materialism it throws light on several other aspects of
education which deserve intensive analyses discourse and validation
Adventure in
consciousness
The Indianpsychebelieved
that man is only one of the numerous manifestation of primary cause but we cannot
fully understand him if as an independentphenomenon. He as well as everything else
can be understood only when we understand that from which everything emerges.
The process of education was set into motion
to create the necessary climate for a
proper ripening of man and intuition
necessity and curiosity demand of environment and quest for the meaning
of life all contributing to it. If the process of evolution itself is movement
of consciousness realising its own freedom from its bondage to material and
other limitations and 20th century the era we are leaving behind has
witnessed the most momentous events and ideas ensuring greater freedom for man
in several floats
Sri Aurobindobelieves that
the realisation of such a freedom is not only a possibility but also certainly
inherent in the very nature of evolutionary development. The true role of
education is in preparing and helping man to arrive there at a new phase of
evolution.
Man must aspire
to go beyond his intellectual,
But the
first the spirits ascent we must be achieve
Out of the
charm from which our natural roes
The soul
must soar sovereign above the form.
Our heart we
must infirm with heavenly strength.
Surprise the
animal with the occult god
Then
kindling the god tongue of sacrifice,
Calling the
powers of a bright hemisphere
_ Sri aurobindo
Sri aurobindo startle’s us
by saying that the first thing is a teacher must know is that nothing can be
taught .the paradox is not meant to be an enigma he emphasis the need for natural and spontaneous
growth of the child. All knowledge in its scope but would make the whole trend
and aim and the permeating spirit not mere worldly efficiency but this self-developing
and self-finding.
Nationalism
It was Sri Aurobindos
influence on the Indian national congress in the first decade of the century
which made the organisation include swadeshi boycott and national education in
its programme. The fundamental weakness of our Indian educational system is
that the Indian student cannot bring his education into any direct relation
with the world in which outside the class or lecture room he continues to live..
For that world is still the old Indian world of his forefathers and it is as
far removed as the poles asunder from the western world which claims his education.
We are sometimes asked
what on the earth we mean by spirituality in art and poetry or in political and
social life a confession of ignorance strange enough in any Indian mouth at
this stage of our national history we have really an echo of the European idea
that are to entirely different things and have
each to be pursued on its own entirely separate lines and in obedience to its own entirely separate
principle
India
can best develop herself and serve humanity by being herself and following the
law of her own nature. Thisdoes not means as some narrowly and blindly suppose
the rejection of everything new that comes to us in the stream time or happens
to have been first developed or powerfully expressed by the west.necessariliy
the new India will seek the same end in new ways under the vivid impulses of
fresh and large ideas by an instrumentality suited to more complex conditions
but the scope of her efforts and action and the suppleness and variety of her
mind will not be less but greater than of old. Spirituality is not necessarily
exclusive it can be and in its fullness must be all inclusive
So with all our aims and activities, spirituality
takes them all and given them a greater diviner, more intimate sense.
“ What India needs especially at this
moment is the aggressive virtues the spirit of soaring idealism , bold creation
,fearless resistance, courageous attack; of the tamasic spirit of inertia we
have already too much .we need to cultivate another training and temperament
another habit of mind’’.
Our calls is to young India it is the young who must
be the builder of the new world mot those who accepts competitive individualism.
According to auroboindo the education which starting with the past and making
full use of the present builds up a great nation.
Aurobindo had little love for Britisheducation inIndia
which he called a mercenary and soulless education and for its debilitating
influence on the inmate’s possibilities of the Indian brain. In India he said
students generally have great capacities as in every field he wanted India to
crave out her own path courageously.
Thank you
